In an effort to support the improvement of food security in rural areas, the Informatics Study Program, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Diponegoro University carried out community service activities with the theme "automatic watering technique KWT Gading Lumintu plantation in Jati District, Blora Regency : efforts to improve food security". This activity is part of a service program that aims to empower community groups, especially the farmer women's Group (KWT), through the application of simple but useful technological innovations.
Gading Lumintu Women Farmers Group (KWT) has been active in the management of vegetable gardens and horticultural crops as part of efforts to meet family food needs and improve the household economy. However, the main challenge faced is the process of watering plants that are still done manually, time-consuming, and depend on the availability of labor, especially in the dry season.
Seeing these problems, the service team designed and installed a timer-based automatic watering system, which can water plants in a scheduled and efficient manner. This technology uses a water pump, reservoir as a water reservoir and a simple automatic regulator that is easy to understand and operated by KWT members.
In its implementation, the head of the service team, Dr. Aris Sugiharto,S.Si, M.Kom, who was accompanied by Doplang Village Head Mr. Agung Sujadi and Doplang Village Head Mr. Agus Supriyono, said that the application of appropriate technology is expected to be a practical solution for KWT in increasing their agricultural productivity. "We hope that this tool will not only facilitate the work of KWT mothers, but also increase crop yields, save water, and become a model that can be applied in other villages," he said.
This activity was also accompanied by training and mentoring to KWT members on how to operate and maintain automatic watering systems, so that the tools can be used sustainably.
Chairman of KWT Gading Lumintu, Mrs. Mariyah expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm for the innovations provided. “This tool is very helpful for us, especially if later during the dry season because Doplang village generally if Dry Water is very difficult. Hopefully it can make our gardens more fertile and the results are better, " he said.
With the implementation of this activity, it is expected that KWT Gading Lumintu can be an example in the use of appropriate technology to support community-based food security, as well as being a strategic partner in empowering rural communities.
