Training on optimizing the use of Word Processing Applications to support the writing of textbooks for teachers of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang

The preparation of textbooks is not only useful for teachers to meet credit scores in order to rise to functional positions or higher ranks, but also useful for students as a support tool in learning activities. Writing textbooks not only requires mastery of materials related to teaching materials, but also required mastery of technology such as word processing applications to help technical document making. If the features of word processing applications such as Microsoft Word are used optimally, of course, it will greatly simplify and speed up the technical creation of textbook documents. Therefore, the community service team (PkM) of the Department of Informatics, Universitas Diponegoro held a PkM activity in the form of “optimization training on the use of Word Processing Applications to support the writing of textbooks for teachers of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang”. Service team members consist of Khadijah, S.Kom., M.Cs. as chairman, Priyo Sidik Sasongko, S.Si., M.Kom, Guruh Aryotejo, S.Kom, M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Rahmat Gernowo, M.Si, and Drs. Bayu Surarso, M.Sc., Ph.D as a member.
This training activity was held on September 23, 2023 at the SPM Muhammdiyah 2 Semarang Hall located on Jl. Kasipah No. 12, Jatingaleh, Candisari District, Semarang City. The training was opened by the principal of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang, Mrs. Masrochatun, S.Pd. The training was attended by teachers at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Semarang. The material presented in this activity consists of 2 things, namely: i) the use of advanced features in Microsof Word word processing applications such as document heading settings, sections, object captions in the form of images or tables, making automatic table of Contents and list of images/tables, and referencing management tools for automatic citation and bibliography creation; ii) Google Cloud applications for writing textbooks, such as Google Doc, Google Spreadsheets, and Google Slides.
During the training activities, the teachers also practice directly utilizing the features of the Microsoft Word and Google Cloud word processing applications using their laptops, each guided by a team of Service and student assistants. The teachers looked enthusiastic at the time of the activity because many get new things that are useful through these activities. To enliven the activity, at the end of the event, door prizes were also given for teachers who were willing to present their work or demonstrate the steps for using these features to other participants.
Through this training activity, it is expected that teachers of SMP Muhammdiyah 2 Semarang can be helped in the technical preparation of textbook documents, so that teachers can spend more time and focus their minds on preparing content or quality material in preparing the textbook.
